NORTH CANTON’S LIBERTY TREE HONORS HISTORY, HERITAGE, AND FREEDOM
Jacob Gaskins Chapter, NSDAR, Dedicates Living Tribute to the Patriots Who Fought for American Independence
Members of the Jacob Gaskins Chapter, NSDAR, joined with North Canton city officials at Arrowhead Golf & Event Center to dedicate a Liberty Tree in honor of Jacob Gaskins.
North Canton, OH — In celebration of America 250, the Jacob Gaskins Chapter, NSDAR, of North Canton proudly sponsored the planting of a Liberty Tree at Arrowhead Golf & Event Center – a location with a meaningful connection to the chapter’s namesake.
The tree stands on land once owned by Jacob Gaskins, whose remarkable life and contributions to the community continue to inspire generations.
Born into slavery in Virginia in 1792, Gaskins overcame tremendous adversity to build a successful and meaningful life. He married Hannah Robinson, became a respected landowner, and operated a station on the Underground Railroad, helping others in their pursuit of freedom. Following the ratification of the 15th Amendment, Gaskins also became the first African American to vote in Plain Township.
The Liberty Tree was planted as part of a national initiative recognizing and celebrating the Patriots of the American Revolution. The initiative honors the historic Liberty Trees in the American colonies, beneath which Patriots gathered to discuss their pursuit of liberty. Perhaps the most famous Liberty Tree stood on Boston Common.
Today, North Canton’s Liberty Tree serves as a living reminder of the courage, conviction, and unyielding hope that inspired the birth of our nation. Through its sponsorship of the tree, the Jacob Gaskins Chapter, NSDAR, recognizes and honors the service and sacrifice of all Patriots of the American Revolution.
On July 12, 2026, the chapter hosted a dedication ceremony for the Liberty Tree and unveiled its commemorative stone.
The ceremony opened with Daughter Paula Tolin leading guests in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by Daughter Sarah Witting leading the recitation of the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States. Chapter Recording Secretary Melissa Gardner led the assembly in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “My Country, ’Tis of Thee.”
North Canton Mayor Matthew Stroia addressed those gathered, while Chapter Regent Stephanie Martin Shively shared the history and significance of the Liberty Tree during the American Revolution. Following the ceremony, chapter members and community guests gathered for fellowship and refreshments.
